Welfare Project:
COMMUNITY OUTREACH CENTRE, St MARY'S - R 205 000
Iqraa
Trust has provided funding in the amount of R205 000 to enable the
Community Outreach Centre, St. Mary’s (COC) to fund the operations of
two Drop-In Centres in Klaarwater and Marianhill
These Drop-In Centres are "Homes"
in
the community using a fully trained Home Based Carer as a surrogate mother to
care for the orphaned children. Children from child headed households have
been identified and enrolled in the Drop-In Centres.
The Drop-In Centres offer the following:
- Children are offered an experience that is as similar as
possible to a "normal" home or childhood.
- The community is closely involved in the care of raising these
children.
- The children are not institutionalised and are therefore not
robbed of a family experience and/or community belonging.
The community Outreach Centre also aims at improving the holistic
health and quality of life of people through education. The Centre
offers a number of projects that address some of the major problems that
face people in local communities, namely: malnutrition, poverty and
HIV/AIDS. It believes that
through the empowerment of local communities they will be enabled to
face and address the challenges and problems of the HIV/AIDS pandemic by
developing innovative and community –based approaches.
